California: day one

It is already December. I know that I am stating the obvious. I had goals of blogging our vacation while on vacation, but by day four my plans to blogging our trip quickly changed to when we arrive home. And now September is long passed. I hope to blog all ten days and will start with day one of our trip.

Our trip to California came at the perfect time for us. It was good to take time away from the office, paying bills, and make time for us as a family to make memories together. I love planning; however this whole trip planning is credited to my amazing husband. He planned it all, booked the flights, and planned what we were doing each of the ten days we would have exploring California.

Our first day consisted of my parents driving us down to BWI airport. Once through security and we arrived at the gate to learn that our flight was delayed. And then delayed a little more until they finally flew in another plane for us. It poured and poured as we waited. Finally, we boarded the plane and the timing actually worked in our favor as it was Myla’s nap time. You have already seen most of the images below of her sleeping as I learned a costly lesson.

We arrived at the rental car pick up and the first question I remember hearing was, “Are you guys moving here?” In mind mind I was thinking how to respond. . .yes there are a lot of bags. I confess I did not attempt to pack light. A pac and play and car seat were both included on this trip. I simply answered “No and smile”. I am guessing he never traveled with a three year old.

Before we left Lyndon research a place for us to eat dinner once we arrived. All we had to do was plug in the address to our GPS. It turned out that the GPS was one the best things we packed. It made traveling so much easier whereas in past trips I was loaded with any possible map potential helpful for our trips from AAA. We ate at a local Mexican restaurant, La Costa on some side street in San Jose. The food was amazing however a little too spicy for Myla.

This night we drove down to Monterey, about an hour south of San Jose. We arrived at the hotel it felt like mid-night to us and after a day of traveling I could barely keep my eyes open. Remembered how i said it pour and poured. Well, I opened Myla’s suitcase to get her into her pajamas and her clothes were soaked. Not just damp, but soaked like someone dipped her bag into a pool of water. I started to hang up her clothes anywhere I could find space. I was running out of room quickly when I discovered that my bag too was soaked! So I started to hang up my clothes on the only space left-on top of the curtains. Lyndon seeing the room covered in clothes came to my rescue. The clothes would no way be dried by morning, so he loaded all the clothes into a bag and headed for the local laundry mat. In that moment I realized this was one of the hundreds of reasons why I married this man. This concluded day one in California.

[…] was quiet and small. Checking in was a breeze! I loved how everything worked out from opening wet luggage, exploring cliffs,  walking to Lombard Street, staying with now called friends, running bare feet […]

A reminder of how much I love CA! I’ve been to that area 3 times. I have a great friend who used to live in San Jose. It certainly is hard to keep up with blogging personal stuff. And I love Blog Stomp. Truly.

Baby Kaleb: 6 months

When you are a parent with a new born you count in weeks and some where you start to count in months. I think it is to help you keep track of time as it seems to fly bye. There are days that go bye and you do not notice change or growth in your baby. You are busy changing diapers, doing loads of laundry, keeping a schedule, making meals, and did I mention more laundry.  And then one day they are sitting up on their own, smiling, laughing when you talk to them, reaching for toys and growth seems to be everywhere. Your baby is growing up and everyone tells you how fast it happens right before your eyes.

Three months have passed since I photographed Baby Kaleb. And in these three short months he has grown so sweetly. O-how I loved his smile, big brown eyes, his little beanie and vest. This time we got a few pictures of the three of them together as a family. Thank you Mirjam for allowing me to capture your family, it is such a joy!!!

After a few minutes of taking pictures of Kaleb in his Phillies sweatshirt we headed to a farm for family pictures.

I grew up on a farm and love the character of old barns.

Kaleb was hamming it up for the camera. Look at his smile!

Above is a new ALL time favorite! I loved everything about it. . .the colors, the love of a mama, and happiness on his face.

I love the prop of the wreath that Mirjam brought for the session! Baby Kaleb is so cute sitting in it all by himself!

At the end of the session we found some golden light!

And the last picture is a favorite of you two! Thank you for taking one more picture! Mirjam you are beautiful!

mission: a perfect tree

Not every year since we have been married have we had a Christmas tree. Of course the first year we did have a tree and then there were a few years we didn’t and attempted to justify it for one reason or another. At night as we drove bye I would always admire verbally out-loud the homes with Christmas tree and lights during the holiday season. However, we would then return home to a Christmas treeless house. Thankfully when Myla arrived three years ago our home is now filled with a Christmas tree during the holiday season.

This was the first year going to Elizabeth Farms just a few miles north of where we live. Upon arriving you get a ticket with your name on it for your tree that you will cut down. You wait in line for a horse drawn wagon to take you into the middle of the field surrounded by hundreds of Christmas trees. As we stepped off the wagon, we headed in the direction of the Frasier firs on a mission. A mission to find the perfect Christmas tree for our home. We searched, examined, even wandered in the Douglas firs for a while; however returning back where we started. Myla wandered through the trees running and hiding, while I was criticizing the height, width, and checking for the best side of each potential tree. I know it should not be that hard to pick a tree. It is not a huge decision in life, but my personality will not settle for second best. So we search a little longer. The mission was accomplished as Lyndon’s eye picked out a beautiful and I might add perfect tree. And now it is in our home decorate with lights too.

below is a favorite of Lyndon walking with his little girl. . .

Bebe and Gigi joined us on our mission.

a family picture by the tree before it was cut down!

since myla has turned three silly should be her middle name.

instead of fighting it, I join her in making silly faces at the camera.

an unexpected surprise was to see the Tomato Pie Cafe has a food stand there!

Their food is so full of flavor, it is so good!

So fun! Can’t wait to get ours this weekend!

But what I want to know is did you use Stomped to create the image boards? :) I hope to try it out on a blog post soon . . .

The Drews

This couple are good friends on mine, the Drews. I have gotten to know them over the last two years as they have attend Crossway and are involved in our care group. They are humble and live their lives for Jesus. They are caring and love others with all their hearts. Earlier this year in care group,  they shared they were expecting their first baby!

There is such an excitement with the first.  I know pregnancy is 9 months long and can seem like eternity; however you will not be pregnant forever. These are the moment you want to remember: the anticipation of the arrival of your baby, what he or she will look like, how will it change life, picking out names, choosing outfits for the baby to wear home, what will labor be like, and remembering the little kicks. It is really a special time for each couple as they wait for their baby to arrive into their family.  Donovan and Heather, thank you for allowing me to capture this time of the two of you as you wait for your baby to arrive! I’m so excited for you two to become a parents and hold your little one for the first time. It is one of the most incredible feelings you can experience.

Donovan-I love how excited you are to be a father!

Heather, I love your smile. I would say you are glowing!

LOVE these three pictures!

I can not wait to meet him or her!

The one above is a favorite!

and one last favorite!

The Katelyn James Workshop Experience

I confess that I have been following Katelyn James Photography for about a year; maybe even longer. I read every blog post faithfully; learning and reading everything she openly shares about the details of her photography business, which lenses to take on vacation, shooting the bling, to her lens’ line up. I admire the way she runs her photography business as well as her images that capture each couple’s love. As soon as I saw Katelyn James’s blog post about her offering a Workshop Experience I knew I needed to attend. I was ready to look at my business and make changes that will be best for my brides and clients. I also looked forward to connecting with other photographers who share the same passion.

I traveled down to Richmond, VA  last Wednesday night in the rain, much like tonight. I had a hard time sleeping; the mixture of excitement and fear of not hearing my alarm kept me checking the clock. Thursday morning I arrived at the Virginia Center for Architecture where the workshop began. Katelyn started talking, sharing, and diverting on some tangents. I did not mind a single one of the tangents; they were filled with examples from her business and were extremely helpful. My hand could not keep up writing with the words she spoke per minute. The day was FULL; taking notes, eating lunch together, head-shots, shooting, answering questions, and more teaching before saying goodbye. Katelyn, I can not thank you enough for taking the time to plan this workshop and inviting us to learn from you openly.

I love learning how to be a better photographer from the knowledge Katelyn shared. I even more loved learning how to create an experience for each of my brides and clients that they will walk away with and have an experience they love, not only the images. If you are a photographer and looking to learn, next time Katelyn offers her Experience Workshop, sign up. Do not hesitate. It was the best investment I put into my business this year. I am looking forward to working with my 2012 brides and clients! Enjoy the many images. . .
