a desire to learn…

In the world of photography there are four letters that have been tugging on my heart for several years. It’s FILM. Yes, as you have read my journey as it started in 2009 I entered the digital world of photography. I was learning how to shoot in manual and what aperture and shutter speed meant. I was searching other photographer’s blogs and leaning anything I could. A year later I began to find myself attracted to certain images, only to discover that the photographer was shooting film. The soft pastel colors and the warm light of each image was beautiful.  August of 2010 (remember I like dates and numbers) I read Jill Thomas blog post. It was her blog post about her experience at the Film Is Not Dead workshop by Jonathan Canlas. Jill Thomas wrote, “I’m not saying shoot film (well I am but you don’t have to), but I am saying try it out.”

This is when the desire to learn film was planted.  I bookmarked the page for a later date and shared this new desire with Lyndon. In August of 2010, my business had only been offical for a month and there was a lot of work to do. Learning film was not on the list. Now almost two more years later this desire to learn is still here. It can be overwhelming where to start so I went back to my bookmark and purchase Jonathan Canlas book early this month. He goes through the basics, and shares openly what film and camera equipment he uses. I’m about half way through this book. I am also in the middle of reading several film photographer’s books: Jose Villa, and Elizabeth Messina. And this month my mom gave me her AE-1 canon 35mm film camera!!! I am so excited to test it out with the film recommendations by Jonathan Canlas and try it out!

and a picture of me first shooting with the Canon AE-1 while at my parents home several weekends ago!

(thanks Mary to taking this picture!)

While we were at my parents house several weekends ago we went through bins of old family photos! I loved it!!

Here are two favorite that my mom took of me when I was little.

Awesome post Jamie! Love that last photo. Is that Grady?

Jamie that is awesome! Have fun learning film! I must say there is something special about film photography – yet I don’t miss it. I personally love all that digital has brought to photography.

I look forward to watching you create, grow, and learn the art of film photography!

Blessings – Jill
PS You were absolutely adorable as a little girl!!! Your mom took wonderful photos of you!

Aw, an Irish Setter! I grew up with an Irish Setter named “Shamrock.” Turning back towards film seems to be the trend right now. Marta Locklear is doing that (her latest images are gorgeous). I started with film and only came to digital after having my kids. My film camera sadly broke due to a splash of water when on a trip to Maine. :( I loved film when I took a B&W class in college. My favorite part, actually, was the dark room. Could get lost in there for ours developing my own prints. Loved that! Have fun and now cool you got your Mom’s camera! Extra special!

Love, War and Service

Today we were together as a family enjoying the holiday. As we talked about weddings and all the planning that goes into a wedding I asked my grandfather again for the details of his wedding. I love hearing his stories, and he recalls them as if they happened yesterday. The story starts with my grandfather enrolling in flight school two weeks before his 21st birthday.  The same day he graduated from flight school (back when it was only in the Army) he took a train home to be wed the next day to my grandmother. There were not elaborate plans or details, yet they were a couple in love and war was not going to keep them separated. They were together for four months until he was stationed in England as a pilot for the B-17 bombers. I sat and listened to him retell how he needed his parents signature to enlist, the train ride out to CO with his new bride for more flight training, the reason why he told my grandmother he married her, and his missions he flew in WWII and was amazed at his service. The world was at war and he chose to serve. I want to thank all those who have served and who have chosen to serve our country. Thank you.

(You would never know his age by this photograph!)

We drove through the INdiantown Fort Gap memorial today for the first time ever, and I lived so close to it for so many years. It was sobering to say the least. I cried taking in the thousands of flags and tombstones at this cemetery alone. TO think of all the men, women and families who have “chosen to serve” as you put it for my freedoms definitely helped to put some things in perspective for me today. THank you to your G-pa, too!

Your Pa is amazing, and I LOVE his new glasses!! So stylish!

Holga

I got my recent roll of holga film back this morning. I loved opening to see the print as I usually do not remember what I have shot on it! This roll took me back to January with Anna and Morgan’s engagement with the only weekend of real snow! I scanned them in myself so the grain and noise in the pictures seems to be magnified. Happy Friday!!! Enjoy!!!

Corinne and John’s engagement! See their session here.Caitlin and Dave’s engagement session. To see the rest click here.and one of me and my sister who flew in last weekend. and then one of the three of us girls!

Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp

I love this time of year: strawberry picking! I love picking  fresh strawberries in the fields. I love being on a farm. I love giving Myla the experience of picking and tasting the sweetness of fresh local fruit. I love spending time as a family. I love traditions. I love telling her about all the years that we have picked strawberries before her and when she was little. I love supporting the local farms. And I love taking picture of the time we spend picking them too! The hardest part about picking strawberries is leaving the patch. No matter how full my basket is I always feel that there is one more to pick! Every year Lyndon tells me how he loves strawberry and rhubarb and remembers eating it in his childhood. So, I tried a new recipe: strawberry rhubarb crisp by Barefoot Contessa. First you need 4 cups of strawberries…we went picking for ours.

The next three pictures are taken by myla. (starting with the one above)

With a little coaching where to focus the red center dot she took some great pictures again!

All Myla wanted to do was eat the strawberries out of my bucket. She thought it was great!

A new rule developed this picking season: if you eat one out of my bucket,  you must pick two to put back in the bucket.

O-how I love my berry bowl!

Now for the recipe

4 cups fresh rhubarb, 1 inch diced (4-5 stalks)

4 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and halved, if large

1 1/4 cups granulated sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons grated orange zest

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

1 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1 cup quick-cooking (not instant) oatmeal, such as McCann’s

12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, diced

Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

For the fruit, toss the rhubarb, strawberries, 3/4 cup of the sugar and the orange zest together in a large bowl. In a measuring cup, dissolve the cornstarch in the orange juice and then mix it into the fruit. Pour the mixture into an 8-by-11-inch baking dish and place it on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.

For the topping, in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the flour, the remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar, the brown sugar, salt and oatmeal. With the mixer on low speed, add the butter and mix until the dry ingredients are moist and the mixture is in crumbles. Sprinkle the topping over the fruit, covering it completely, and bake for 1 hour, until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.

**did you think that I made it through without tweaking the recipe a little? I tried my best to follow it; however I only used 1 orange for the zest (i did not measure) and only 1/4 cup of the fresh squeezed orange juice(i did measure this). You could definitely taste the orange in the crisp. 2 out of the 4 served would prefer no orange in their crisp next time. And I  did not fill the 1/2 c granulated sugar to the top for the topping, a 1/4 cup would be plenty for me.

ENJOY!!!

Mmmm, can’t wait to try this! Andy and I love a good strawberry / rhubarb treat! Funny, this made me think of Blueberries for Sal, too.

I just read “Blueberries for Sal” to Bella today; your Myla picking berries out of your bucket reminds me of that story. Ever read that one to her? It would be perfect to read to her if you do the annual blueberry pick on July 4th weekend. :)

I just found this blog the other day w/ a handful of rhubarb recipes: http://www.simplebites.net/spotlight-ingredient-rhubarb-recipe-rhubarb-upside-down-cake/

I cannot wait to try one or two of them.

We love doing the same! We picked strawberries at our local csa this year. I’ve never had rhubarb, though!

We used to do this as kids as well! Such great memories. They we started growing our own strawberries, but that only lasted a season or two as the bunnies kept eating them!

so many more to come…

My dream was always to be married in my folks’ back yard, barefoot with daisies in my hair just like this beautiful bride. But, I married an “uptown” guy with much different tastes. :) We’re learning to meet in the middle. So, maybe by our 30th, we’ll do the wedding I wanted. 😉

Woooo pretty! Can’t wait to see more!!!

STELLAR!
