Four of Twelve

I wrote all about our time spent together as a family this past Easter weekend and the time we enjoyed together. And hit published. At least I thought I hit published. It did not save what I wrote about lunch at my brother and sister in laws on Saturday, the home run derby wiffle ball game in their back yard, dying eggs, and a delicious dinner together. My cousins, parents and grandfather all joined us Saturday and then Lyndon’s mom and husband joined us on Sunday. I wrote about how again I’m thankful for the iPhone and facetime was it make the distance between us and my sister seem not so far.

I also went on to share how on the way home from church I texted everyone and asked them not to change until we took our  family photo. After a quick, well as quick as family photos can be, the afternoon was then spent enjoying our traditional grilled lamb dinner, Easter egg hunt, afternoon naps, and watching the end of the Masters! Our Easter egg hunt lasted over an hour as we searched for only sixteen eggs. There were seven adults looking and my house was completely torn apart! I mean every cabinet pulled out and left out for the next person to look through! Everyone did help put my house back to order in the end. I did not win this year, like I did the last two; however I was happy as Lyndon won! It was down to finding the last egg to determine the winner! My dad truly has amazing hiding abilities!!! Beside getting a family photo I thought it would also be great to snap our four of twelve photo for this month! Though I end up looking back on Easter picture wishing I was more tan and had a little more color. Maybe next year we go somewhere I can get some sun on my face! Anyway…I love any time I get to hang out with my family and this weekend was no different.

I hope you are snapping your family photo too each month; if not join me now!

Easter Reading, DIY projects, and a Bunny Cake

We are celebrating Easter this weekend with my family. My family is huge on traditions!! And I have grown to love traditions! First, I love celebrating Easter with my church family! It is one holiday that we stay local and I love celebrating the work of Christ on the cross! You can find reading preparing for Easter celebration here. Other traditions for Easter day will again include grilled lamb for dinner, an Easter egg hunt, and of course bunny cake!  Enjoy!!!

Our Bunny Cake is actual Ina Garten’s Flag Cake recipe.

I made it earlier this week and froze it as I am away shooting in VA today. It freezes well.

So how do I make it into a bunny cake. Two circles.

One for the face and the other circle divided into two ears (outside of circle edges cut into bunny shape ears) and the middle part is his bow tie.

My DIY project for this week was to plant my pansies.

As a child I remember reading The Velvetten Rabbit. I ordered it for Myla this year and can not wait to read it to her.

YoYo.com is a great place to order!

And the rest of the ideas that I share came from Pinterest!!!

How cute are these DIY bunnies!! You can find it here.

If I had more time I might have attempted this, though I think it would be more wishful thinking!

Next would be natural dye for Easter eggs! Check out this site for suggestions.

I have never tried this but would prefer natural!

We hide real eggs here in our home. One year one egg was hidden inside the bunny cake!

The hunt is for us children that are now adults! It is an all out competition and INTENSE!!

I will say that I have won the last two years! We will see who wins this year!

Oh my gosh that cake is ADORABLE! I love it!

I planted our pansies yesterday! I love pansy faces. I’ve also enjoyed Noel Piper’s Lenten Light readings in the past. This year we’re doing Ann Voskamp’s passion tree for the kids and I’m reading “Reliving the Passion.”

My first lens

Over the last several months I have had inquiries about what camera and lenses to purchase. I know that everyone is different and has different styles and taste in photography. There is no one camera fits all. So, what I do is ask questions. Whenever I go to my dad for business advice or questions he starts with asking questions. I have learned this is helpful for me to define what I really want. Here are some of my questions: What will you primarily shoot with your camera?…(kids, landscapes, outdoors, indoors, weddings, food, the soccer team). You get the idea. What is important to you in a camera and lens? (how many mega pixels, the cost, zoom abilities, blurry backgrounds). And of course what is your budget?

Yesterday I shared that my first lens was the 85mm 1.8 and that I would not recommend investing in this as your first lens. I’m am not claiming to be an expert of what is the best lens to buy; however I have some recommendations if you are looking to invest. Here is the process I went though that ended in purchasing the 85mm. I started with the kit lens and within a short period of time I became frustrated with my images. Where was all the blurriness? My pictures lack of blurriness (bokeh) that I loved in other photographers work. At first it was a mystery to me how they achieved the bokeh. I quickly learned that bokeh had everything to do with aperture. The kit lens would never allow me to create bokeh in the background. In order to achieve the look that I desired I would need a lens with a lower aperture. I did some research on the web about lenses and decided I wanted the 85mm 1.8. I would still claim that this lens was what made me fall in love with photography because it achieve what had become the most important to me in images: bokeh. Quickly, after shooting with the 85mm I realized that I was backing up and often running out of space when shooting indoors. I was often standing many feet away from the person I was photographing. I realized that I wanted to be closer then feel like I was yelling.  At the time of purchasing the 85mm, I had very little understanding of focal lengths and how the focal lengths were affected on my Canon 40d. This is important and I overlooked it. I want to be clear that I do love the 85mm; however just not as my first lens option mainly due to the reasons listed above as well as the price.

Here is my recommendation: practice shooting at different focal lengths on your kit lens. Not for a couple of shots but for a whole day or week. One week shoot at 50mm and another at 35mm and another 85mm. Compare your photos. Look at them and see what you like. Maybe you will realize you like the zoom ability rather then moving yourself when you shoot with a prime lens (one set focal length). Take your time to discover what is important to you in a picture. If it is the bokeh, then you know that you need a lens with a low aperture. The other option which I would recommend is to also rent a lens before you purchase it. This way you can test out a lens to make sure you love it!! It is an investment. There are several companies that you can rent lenses from. Borrow Lenses has high recommendations. And my last recommendation is if you want blurry backgrounds at a very reasonable cost then invest in the Canon 50mm 1.8. It is truly a great lens for the price. I hope this is helpful for one person and if you have any questions feel free to ask!

I went back through old images to find ones shot with my 85mm 1.8.

In order to get the space around Myla I was many feet away from her.

I wanted the space to show how small she was at one year old.The 85mm is great for portraits and for blurry backgrounds!!Again with a prime lens I was the one having to move to get close shots and then back up for more space.

With the low aperture of the 85mm, I felt like I could tell a story by focusing on a detail.

What’s In My Bag?

As I began my photography journey you know that I had no clue about any piece of camera bodies or lenses that were out on the market. I was shooting film with my Nikon and shooting with a digital point and shoot. It was my husband who handed me a Canon 40d camera body with the kit lens and a 10-22mm lens back in 2009. The kit lens was the primary lens  that stayed on the camera body and the 10-22mm was to be used to shoot interiors. It was not my plan or initial goal to start a business; however as God moved me in this direction my understanding of camera bodies (full frame) and lenses (wanting a low aperture) also grew.  Early on I was wisely told to invest in lenses (they come with you!) and was so thankful for this advice! So here I am three years later and here is what is in my bag!

My go to lens. 50mm 1.2. This was my first “L” series lenses. The “L” means professional in canon’s world.

This was best Valentine’s Day present to date! I really have an amazing husband!!

The 35mm 1.4. I wanted something wider then the 50mm without distortions. I love the 35mm.

The 85mm 1.2 is my most recent purchase of prime lenses and it has quickly become a favorite!

These three are my favorite lenses to shoot with hands down! I love prime lenses!!

I use this lens during the ceremony. I love that the aperture is a 2.0 and works well in low lighting settings.

This lens has replaced my 10-22mm for interior shooting. This is my only zoom lens.

I also use this for bridal party formals or large groups! This lens captures all the bling and delicate details too!

I have two Canon 5d Markii camera bodies. One I shoot with and one for back up.

I also shoot with my Holga on wedding days. I love the 5×5 square images it produces on film. Here is my first camera…my 40d. I use this as my back up to my back up. It is not getting that much use any more!

85mm 1.8 was my first lens with a low aperture. It is called a portrait lens.

I loved it for the blurry backgrounds I was able to achieve, though it would not be the first lens I would recommend investing in.

The 10-22mm is not really as wide as the numbers suggest because of the cropped senor on the 40d.I started with the 430 speedlite and upgraded to the 580 speedlite. It was the upgrade! You will also find memory cards, rechargeable batteries, back up batteries, and my lenspen for cleaning my lenses.

And I forgot to add in my burt’s bee chap-stick.

Most of my lenses and accessories have been purchased from B&H photo and my camera bodies through Lee’s Camera Center here locally.

. . .. . .. . .. . .

I love prime lenses too. I have the 50mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.8 and love them both. Still need a nice wide angle though, similar for yours for cityscapes, large groups, and landscapes though. That and an upgrade to a full-frame camera! :)

But you didn’t show us your bag! What do you use to store all that in? ;)
