Book Review: Fine Art Wedding Photography Jose Villa

I received this book last Christmas and finished it this summer while my toes were buried in the sand. I’m not much of a reader, however I learned that I do like to read while at the beach. Within the first couple of pages Jose suggested that fine art is “about creating a cohesive piece of art, not merely a record of the wedding day.” These words have remain in the back of my mind as I continued to shoot weddings this summer and fall. With each image I shoot I want it to compliment one another telling the story of the wedding day. It has helped me to think through shooting the details.

I enjoyed reading about what is in his camera bag, how he sees soft light, reasons why he shoots film, setting the scene with his clients, practical tips and the boxes filled with lessons he learned. He was open and honest in this book about his journey and experiences along the way. The chapters were clearly outlined and it was easy to read. The gorgeous photographs created an anticipation with each turning of the page. If I was shooting film I would have read this book with a different lens paying closer attention to his settings and suggestions. His images inspire me to the challenge of learning film.

Anticipation. This one word stood out to me from his book. It is an area I want to continue to grow. He spoke about creating images with emotions. There are many emotions through the wedding day; however some could go unnoticed without anticipating them. Knowing the schedule and events of the wedding day has helped me know when to anticipate moments where emotions naturally flow. I want to be ready with my camera to photograph these sweet moments.

One of the practical tips he shared about shooting the ceremony is asking the couple to pause and kiss at the end of the aisle as they are exiting. I remember pausing for a kiss at our wedding but eight years ago I did not know Jose Villa. It was my mother who suggested pausing for a kiss for this photo opportunity. When I remember, I usually suggest to each couple to pause for a kiss because I agree with my mother and Jose Villa that it is a “winning shot”. You can purchase this book here or add to your Christmas list this year.

Meet Sara of Lazio Images

Everything was set. Outfits were layout and ironed, shoes by the door, and our second outfit hung on hangers waiting to be loaded into the car as I left for my hair cut. I waited and scheduled to have my hair cut Saturday afternoon before our family session. Darcy of Salson Enso removed the stress for me of doing my hair. After I arrived home from my hair appointment we had about twenty minutes to get dressed, touch up make up, blow dry Myla’s hair, and get out the door. Lyndon loaded the car as I finished Myla’s hair and we were off to meet Sara.

When I first started photography my good friend Angie shared her sister’s photography website with me, Lazio Images. I began reading her blog post and loved her natural and clean photographs she captured. Sara is a photographer out in Colorado. When she offered family sessions while visiting Lancaster area I immediately contacted her to schedule ours.

We met Sara at our church farm property this past Saturday. It was the perfect fall evening and a touch warmer then I expected. I had been looking forward to this time with my family and being in front of Sara’s camera. I will admit I was a bit nervous. I was nervous that I would not be able to relax, and be myself. It was not my turn to think about all the details, where to stand, how to pose, or find the best light. My goal was to enjoy my family.

I want you to know from the moment Sara greeted me with a warm hug I could feel myself relax. All the details and thoughts swirling around in my mind settled down. Sara is warm and friendly. She is personable and asked Myla questions, getting to know her. We chatted about their drive out east, their chocolate lab, the difference of weather of here and CO and some shots that I would like of our family.

I was able to enjoy my family and Sara made that possible. There was a moment as we were reading to Myla that I forgot that Sara was even photographing us. She was present and at the same time not intrusive. Sara smiled. She kept us moving and was sensitive to Myla’s crazy ideas of what she thought should be photograph. Sara directed us and gave suggestions. I was able to trust her. I appreciate her heart as a mother and as a photographer. I am looking forward to more opportunities to connect with her.

I want to welcome Sara and her family to Lancaster! Plans changed from a visit to a move from Colorado. They arrived in Lancaster the night before our family session. Sara, thank you for giving your time Saturday evening before any boxes were unpacked to photograph us. I’m excited to see the rest images you captured! I already love the ones you shared! When you have a minute check her work out!

What to Wear?

When I was little, this was the question my mom asked me every night before school. I had to lay out my outfit so that in the morning I didn’t spend time searching for the shirt I wanted, only to find it buried under a pile of clothes. Yes, I’ll admit my room was a mess and I was the only one to blame for it. What’s funny now is that I find myself asking Myla the very same question each night before Pre-K, “What are you going to wear?” For the record,  while this has prevented some drama we are still having meltdowns about wearing shoes now that the weather is cooler. She would love to wear flip flips until it snows.

And now I am asking myself the very same question as we prepare for our own family photo shoot this weekend.  I can not wait for Sara of Lazio Images to capture the three of us! More on her later. I thought I would share my process with you since I imagine I am not the only one who stresses over what to wear, photo shoot or not.

Over the years any sense of style (aside from the clear originality of jeans and a t-shirt) has come from my sister. I like to defer to her for advice and honest opinions as she knows style but also knows me best. As I have gradually begun to figure out my own personal style, I have grown to love styles from J.Crew, Madewell, Anthropologie, and Ruche, to name a few. I flip through pages of magazines and dog ear the ones that catch my eye.  As with my photography, I cannot help but pay attention to all of the fashion details! I look at what they are wearing down to the details of shoes color, belts and even the bracelets around their wrists. I have also expanded my fashion vocabulary to incorporate two important terms when it comes down to deciding what to wear: coordinating and layers.

These two words have slowly come to overrule my driving impulse to dress in jeans and a t-shirt. Coordinating: colors and style that go together, compliment, but don’t match exactly. I like to look for colors that I love and add one more color that will compliment it. I love yellow and grey, blue and greens, and yellow and blue and there is always a touch of pink for my girl. For the record, this did not come naturally to me at all. I had the help of my daughter whose desire is to match me. I started with practicing with our outfits for Sunday morning church and am now actually beginning to enjoy coordinating with my family.

Second is the all important layers. Remember there are no layers to jeans and a t-shirt; though it’s my favorite. I had to learn to add layers or accessories, the first accessory being a belt. That was a simple and small enough change that I still felt comfortable. Belts come in all sorts of color and even glitter now, so options are not a problem. A necklace, or a bracelet and a pair of earrings will also add more layers and details. If you are pulling your hair up, add a flower or something that sparkles.

One final tip I have for you is to get to know Shavee. Yep, she is the J. Crew personal stylist at the Towson mall. She is amazing and pulls outfits together that coordinate and have layers that I would never see when walking through the store. I have grown to trust (and depend on!) her style and taste. So if you are in the area, stop by and ask if she is available, and try on the outfits she suggests for you. You might just find a new favorite outfit!

So these are just some thoughts…what are your tips when choosing what to wear?

Here is how I started…pulling favorites and mixing and matching them.

But, don’t worry the final outfits I think I picked aren’t pictured below. Now off to iron some clothes.

CANNOT wait to see your family pics, Jamie!!! you guys always look great.

I have a name for my style. It’s “Classy Bohemian.” At least, it’s what I work towards. I like classic looks with a bohemian/vintage twist. I still wear jeans and t-shirts a lot around the house because I’ve got 3 crazy kids and working hard. But I do love layers. That’s one thing about fall that I love because it’s easier with scarves and sweaters. I like Ruche and Anthro the best for inspiration, although I rarely buy from there. The problem I have currently is that although I enjoy fashion I don’t actually like to shop, unless it’s online. And I certainly don’t like to shop with three kids, nor do I like to spend a free evening shopping. That’s one reason why I’m thankful for online shopping! :) I’m sure you guys will look great this weekend. Can’t wait to see your pictures!

Steinman Park: Kristen and Jon Mike

It was the middle of the week. Kristen and her two girlfriends were seated at the outdoor dining at Steinman Park. It was a warm August evening and they were enjoying dinner together. You see, Kristen and Jon Mike have had much a long distance relationship during and upon graduating college. They wait for the weekend to plan trips to see one another.

One by one her girlfriends excused themselves from the table, leaving Kristen alone. But not for too long, as Jon Mike was now standing behind her. He reached out his hand and touched her on her shoulder. Much to Kristen’s surprise as she turn around she saw Jon Mike standing there. How was he here? He was supposed to be in Virginia working. It was not the weekend. Well, Jon Mike planned this trip to be a surprise as it was the night he got down on one knee and asked his college sweetheart to marry him. Soon there will be no long distance in their relationship as the plan to tie the knot this coming July.

Fall is Kristen’s favorite season and this last Saturday was the perfect fall afternoon for their engagement session. It was only appropriate to begin at Steinman Park were they got engaged. I quickly learned that Jon Mike puts a smile on Kristen’s face like no one else can. And that Kristen has the most beautiful smile. I loved my time hearing how they met in college, getting to know them, and talking about next July! They were up for anything I asked and I appreciated their excitement for their engagement pictures.

I am looking forward to shooting their wedding next July on her great grandfather’s farm here in Lancaster. I must thank Mary of Mary Dougherty Photography for her kindness in referring this couple to me. ENJOY!!!

One of the first frames I captured of them!! LOVE!

This was the same table that Kristen was sitting when Jon Mike surprised here that evening in August!Jon Mike you did an amazing job carefully selecting her ring! Well-done!

We got here right before a crowd showed up!

I just LOVE the way Jon Mike makes her smile!

OH how I love this one! This red wall was a great backdrop for their portraits!a quick change of outfits and some more walking around the city!Kristen you are so sweet and beautiful!we found a few trees that were bright yellow!and I will end on a favorite…I asked for one more picture as we were walking back to the cars.

I was so thankful when they responded with a yes to my request!
