Costly Click

We were on day four of our vacation in CA and I was sitting on the bed downloading the previous day’s pictures. I had hoped (okay planned) to download my pictures each night on vacation and then also find time to edit the pictures along the way. A girl can dream-right?!  Turns out, most nights I was exhausted by 9 and editing did not even cross my mind. So, four days in I was finally taking a few minutes to import all of our images.  As they imported into Lightroom I quickly noticed that some images of Myla asleep on her dad during our flight were missing.  I don’t know whether it is because I am a mom or photographer (probably both!), but each of those pictures is significant to me.

I minimized Lightroom quickly and tried everything I could think of to find those images. I tried re-downloading all the images, thinking maybe they would reappear. And they did, but in a completely different format. So this time I could see the six missing images, but when I clicked  to open them an ominous ‘Operation failed’ stared back at me in the middle of the screen. Such a tease!  So I highlighted the images that were in the wrong format, right clicked and delete them. They disappeared out of the folder, which was just what I wanted.  Or so I thought.  But when I attempted take three of downloading all the files, the six images did not appear.  And that’s when I realized that with that one click I had accidentally deleted the six file images not from my computer but from my actual memory card.  As any photographer can attest to, these rare instances of lost images instantly make your heart sink. So as you can imagine, I was pretty upset with myself.  In all of my Type A glory, my usual process is to never delete images until I am finished editing and saving them in two places.  But I wasn’t quite ready to give up on these images.  When we returned home I immediately took the memory card to the camera store for them to run their recovery software. Technology never ceases to amaze me.  That night it was a costly click, but I am now even more thankful to have these images recovered. To me…they are worth it.

[…] Our first day consisted of my parents driving us down to BWI airport. Once through security and we arrived at the gate to learn that our flight was delayed. And then delayed a little more until they finally flew in another plane for us. It poured and poured as we waited. Finally, we boarded the plane and the timing actually worked in our favor as it was Myla’s nap time. You have already seen most of the images below of her sleeping as I learned a costly lesson. […]

SO SWEET!!! Glad they were saved!!

So scary! I too never delete images from the memory card until my session has been backed up in two places . . . you just never know!! Glad they were rescued!
